There is certainly more to Lapland than simply winter and Santa (although that is pretty cool!).

We are in the midst of the transference from autumn to winter in Lapland. There are some warmer days and some cooler with the trend gradually moving towards the cooler. The main event right now is the prevalence of the Northern Lights in the region. This will continue to improve as the days become darker and shorter with more opportunity to see this spectacular phenomenon.
Whilst the cottage itself is very remote, with just one neighbour in vision (about 75m away) and otherwise surrounded by meadow, forest and river, life is not far away!
The 99 runs past the house which is a main route north but you will be lucky to see 6 cars pass in the winter per hour and maybe 10 in the summer months.
Just 25 mins drive south of the house will have you arriving at the Eurocity of Haparanda/Tornio where the Swedish and Finnish cities merge. Here you can find everything you should need including large shopping outlets and restaurants and everything else you would want from a city. Also it houses the worlds northernmost Ikea!
Nearest airports are Lulea in Sweden and Rovaniemi in Finland. Both are around 1.5 hours drive from the cottage. Lulea has year round links and is our preferred option. You will need a hire car but even in the height of winter, with winter tyres as standard and the roads being extremely well maintained and cleared of snow, it is a straightforward drive with just two main roads to follow straight to the cottage.
Is there skiing nearby?
Yes, around the cottage there are various resorts for both downhill and cross country skiing. The largest of which is Svanstein around an hour and a half north of the cottage.
Can we visit Santa Claus from here?
Absolutely! The main and original Santa Claus village is in Rovaniemi but there are actually various opportunities and resorts nearby that allows you and your children to visit the big man in real life!
